About Us

A harsh reality was brought to my attention in 2006. The mortality rate of newborns and children under the age of five is 10 million per year - over 1,000 per hour. To this day those numbers still bother me.

The facts you are about to read were compiled by, World Health Organization. "Every year, 4 million newborns die within the first month of life around the globe. Half of them die within the first 24 hours of life."

Cindy Another World Health Organization statement, "About 20 million children under five worldwide are severely malnourished, which leaves them more vulnerable to illness and early death."

Through the World Health Organization, The Global Immunization Vision and Strategy, United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Millennium Development Goal, Save the Children, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and others have accomplished the following: Many organizations are aiding with education about "before, during and after a pregnancy." Also, is the importance in keeping the baby warm. Other organizations are supplying sterile razor blades to cut umbilical cords and medications. What about a knitted hat or cap?

I can do that. Can you?

Hand in Hand is focusing on awareness and participation throughout the globe. We are asking all knitters and crocheters to make a hat. If you can do more that is marvelous. Before you send out to an organization keep in mind that your family, friends, neighbors and local community may need that hat. Below is an example:

Will take a long time for me to not feel the joy that occured one evening while displaying hats during an awareness to the public day. They were made for the LEI children in Belabela, Africa. Two children asked me if they could have a hat to keep themselves warm. "Yes." was my immediate reply. After this they both stopped and asked if they could pick out a hat for their brothers and sisters. "Yes." They are not in the compiled 10 million list. Children over 5 years old get cold also.

Cindy As you are reading about us perhaps you are seeing how the need is greater than the suppliers. Knitters and crocheters around the globe are aiding with the mortality rate. There are numerous organizations, Internet groups and churches assisted those in need. This doesn't mean we are close with this problem being resolved. Far from it. Please join us in erasing the mortality rate and educating another person through knitting or crocheting.

In the program page you can read about our tentative (5 years) schedule to drop the numbers. Included is the educational factor (knitting and crocheting) which, took flight on Thursday evening, September 11, 2008. From that evening forward we've grown into an intergenerational group.

The sparkle in the childrens eyes when they caught on to the chain stitch and single crochet - precious. One young lady is teaching her mom. You can read about our adventures in the blog with images -- try to.

Hand in Hand is your hands creating a hat that will aide in keeping a newborn alive or a child. One hat saves one life, two hats saves two lives, three hats saves three lives. . . .
